Proper flossing removes plaque and food particles in places where a toothbrush cannot easily reach — under the gumline and between your teeth. Because plaque build-up can lead to tooth decay and gum disease, daily flossing is highly recommended.
Having a hard time flossing and getting into a routine to clean between your teeth? Here are some tips and ideas that may help:
#1 Try to floss on a schedule. Start with Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Eventually work your way up to every day.
- #2 Buy a pack of floss picks. They have a handle which will allow you to floss with one hand, which may make it easier. They are also good for helping you reach all the way to the molars in the back of your mouth.
#3 Floss in the shower as soon as you get in. Just don’t let the floss go down the drain.
#4 Floss during the daytime. Don’t wait until the end of the night to floss, when you are sleepy and it’s easy to “forget”. Floss any time during the day.
#5 Use Softpicks and other soft devices shaped like a toothpick to clean between your teeth.
